Overview
Mommy’s Day is a short, but sweet, narrative-focused game where the player is a young boy helping his dad finish preparations to celebrate Mother’s Day before Mom gets home.
The player sprinkles a cake, draws a flower, and writes a Mother’s Day card. Each of these actions are based around a single simple mechanic of drawing, but are presented different contextually as making different items.
Role:
I was one of the game designers for Mommy's Day.
Tasked with making a game with narrative, I collaborated with the team to quickly agree on a basic story that was in our scope before working out details with the other designer.
I contributed narrative and gameplay aspects such as a mini-game where the player makes a flower for mom.
I also highly suggested that we have a specific order for the mini-games; in particular, I wanted the most sentimental element, the card, to be last. This was because the mini-games were one of the few elements that could help create some emotional and narrative build-up to the end.
Besides that, I also wrote the dialogue script for the voiced lines, and used an HUD widget to build a functional start menu and credits screen. Buttons are anchored properly on the menus, so the positions are consistent no matter the size of the screen.
